Technical
During composting, mesophilic microbes initially break down simple sugars, generating heat that raises temperatures to the thermophilic range (55–65 °C). This thermophilic phase accelerates protein denaturation and pathogen kill, while subsequent mesophilic microbes further decompose complex polymers into humic substances, CO₂, and water.
