Membrane emulsification produces monodisperse droplets by forcing a dispersed phase through a porous membrane under controlled pressure.
Technical
The process relies on balancing interfacial tension, dispersed phase viscosity, and membrane pore size to achieve stable droplet detachment. Surfactants lower interfacial tension, while maintaining dispersed phase viscosity below 10 mPa·s prevents pore clogging. Pressure differentials of 0.1–5 bar drive the dispersed phase through the membrane, creating droplets of 1–100 µm.
