Sift together flour, sugar, cocoa, salt and baking soda. Place in an ungreased 8 inch square pan. Make 3 holes in the mixture. In 1 hole put the vanilla, in the second hole, the vinegar, and in the third hole the melted butter. Pour 1 c. water over all and mix well. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes. Invert pan on wire rack and let stand until cake drops from pan, about 10 minutes. Frost if desired.
